Let’s Stay Safe This Season

(Sent on behalf of Pat Campbell | EVP & Breckenridge COO)

We are all buzzing with excitement for the 2013/2014 winter season. But it is important not to let our excitement overwhelm our responsibility around safety.

This email provides you critical information to do your job in the safest possible manner and to enjoy your time on the slopes all season long, including:

  • ·         An overview of Play It Safe. Play All Season. & Journey to Zero initiatives.
  • ·         An introduction to the latest Employee Safety video message from our Mountain Division President Blaise Carrig and other company executives.
  • ·         Your responsibility code and expectations around your skiing/riding conduct both on and off the job to keep you, and those around you, safe.

Play It Safe. Play All Season. & Our Journey to Zero

As you know, we place the highest value on the safety of our guests and employees and, for years, we’ve led the industry with innovative, award-winning safety programs and initiatives designed to help our guests and employees understand their responsibility while skiing and snowboarding.

Last year, we launched the Play It Safe. Play All Season. slope safety guest-facing campaign and it will continue this year to elevate the guest and employee experience on the mountain by communicating how all mountain users can ski and snowboard more responsibly and still have a great time.

From an internal perspective, our goal is to eliminate lost time incidents from the workplace. To be successful, every one of us must contribute. We encourage you to take an active role in making this a safe place to work and play – this is our Journey to Zero (lost time incidents).

No matter what your job is here at Vail Resorts – you play an important role in our safety journey. Help us keep other employees safe, guests safe and of course yourself safe in all your activities – we want you to be able to Play It Safe. Play All Season.

Your Responsibility Code

We know that skiing and riding are fun, but they also involve risks. We need all of our guests, and especially our employees, to ski within their limitations and to act responsibly at all times while on the mountain. We have zero tolerance for anyone skiing or riding irresponsibly or acting inappropriately.

Breaking a slope safety guideline – even during your non-work hours – can result in serious implications to your employment. If you are involved in a collision, get stopped by an on duty mountain employee (like our Mountain Safety team) for violating slope safety, you may lose your skiing/riding privileges and face potential disciplinary action up to, and including, employment termination.

Keep the following responsibility code in mind to keep safe at our resorts:

1.       Always stay in control and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects.

2.      People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them.

3.      You must not stop where you obstruct a trail or are not visible from above.

4.      Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others.

5.      Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.

6.      Observe all posted signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas.

7.      Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.
Remember, as a member of our team, safety should always be on your mind whether you are on the job or just on the mountain. Before you head out to the slopes again, make a commitment to safety.

We hope these reminders help to provide you a safe and memorable Experience of a Lifetime this season.
