Message from New Director Fred Rumford
Hello Vail Ski and Snowboard Pros,
I hope all of you are healthy and enjoying some summer fun. I would like to start off by letting you all know how incredibly excited I am to return to Vail as the Director of one of the most prestigious schools in the world.
I know many of you, and at the same time there are many of you whom I do not. I would like to share a little background about me and who I am. I am truly a product of the Vail Ski and Snowboard School and have been incredibly fortunate to work my way up from child student, to instructor, to director. I grew up taking lessons at the Golden Peak Children’s Ski School, or the “Bratskeller” as it was known back then. I was fortunate to have made my skiing debut on the Gopher Hill rope tow and poma lift and received instruction from passionate instructors. Some of whom are still teaching skiing for the Vail Ski School today.
The second phase of my journey started thirty years ago in Lionshead as a 7-14 Children’s instructor. This is where I cut my teeth, trained, gained my certifications and taught countless beginner classes on Chair 15. Over the last nine years I have held directorships at Telluride, Keystone and Beaver Creek and now look forward to sharing new experiences and opportunities with the Vail Ski and Snowboard School.
I believe the continued growth and success of the Vail Ski and Snowboard school rests on the shoulders of those who have a solid foundation in its history, show adaptability and possess a clear vision for the future. My lifelong love of snow sliding has been fueled by an endless search for untracked snow and my desire to be the best. I have chased winter around the world: teaching skiing in Australia and competing in Synchronized Skiing and Powder Eight competitions which resulted in a World Championship and European championship, respectively.
I am excited and optimistic about the future of the Vail Ski and Snowboard School! My door is always open and I would love to hear what inspired you to join this industry and to pursue a career in Snow Sports? Please stop by my office to introduce yourself, reconnect, share your story, or just say hello!
